Carlisle,UK -FT, by Andrew Child -May 23 2011: -- Stobart, the UK logistics group famed for its distinctive Eddie Stobart trucks, cited extreme winter weather and difficult economic conditions as it reported an 11.4 per cent fall in full year pre-tax profits to £29.5m... Stobart also highlighted a new £90m 12-month contract with Iggesund, the Swedish board maker, to supply biomass for its Lillyhall plant, following the completion of a buy-out of Biomass, which supplies timber and low-grade softwood to the new generation of minimum-carbon power plants... The company, which operates a fleet of 1,850 lorries, announced earnings per share of 9p down from 11.7p in 2010 and a final dividend of 4p per ordinary share, bringing the total for the year to 6p... Revenue from continuing operations was £500.4m for the year, up 11.8 per cent... TRUCKING INDUSTRY * UK - Small-medium hauliers most at risk of insolvency

London,EN,UK -Road Transport, by Joanna Bourke -13 May 2011: -- More than half of logistics firms had to cut costs during the first quarter after a sluggish start to the year, according to new research by Bibby Financial Services... Bibby, in its latest quarterly business index, said this placed SMEs within the sector at significant risk of bankruptcy, despite revenue growth in March... The Bibby index, which measures the average monthly turnover of 3,000 Bibby business customers from a range of industries, shows that the warehousing and distribution sector had an average score of 99.9 in the three months to 31 March (with a score of more than 100 regarded as strong). This was an improvement on the 90.3 reported in Q1 2010... Of the logistics firms tracked, 59% admitted they were having to cut costs to prepare for future economic challenges, while 45% confirmed they were doing worse than a year ago. The gloomy outlook comes despite 41% saying they had seen an increase in the number of new contract wins... (Photo from dehavillandfleet)

Freight Transport * UK - Study: Policy needs a rethink

LCP Consulting, the UK's freight transport policy needs a new vision based on solid evidence

London,EN,UK -Eyefortransport -Mar 28, 2011:  ...  Since 2000, five attempts to define the UK's integrated transport policy have failed to produce a robust policy approach to freight and logistics... The LCP Consulting Paper, UK Freight Transport: setting a coherent strategy and direction for 2020 and beyond, highlights the importance of freight and logistics and the nature of the challenge going forward... The work also identifies some significant omissions in current freight data that should influence future decision making and the development of freight policy:

* The work of more than one million vans and foreign-registered HGVs (which account for around 6% of the total distance travelled by lorries on British roads) are going unrecorded.

* Off-shoring of UK manufacturing and growth in global sourcing has distorted national statistics.

* A previous commitment to define freight flows by sector is not yet fulfilled.

The report's author, LCP Consulting's chairman Professor Alan Braithwaite, said: "Freight transport policy needs to clearly define the strategic priorities and provide guidance on future operating practices, but the data and modelling used to develop and determine policy will need to be significantly upgraded to inform public debate on the difficult policy choices ahead" ...(Photo from img3.photographersdirect: M25 " London orbital motorway " long queue of trucks gridlocked in traffic jam)

Road Haulage * UK - Costs rise

Road haulage costs rose by 4.9% in the 12 months...

London,UK -HGV UK -December 14, 2010: ... to October 1, according to the Road Haulage Association’s annual cost movement survey... The survey also found that, even discounting fuel, costs rose by 1.7% and rising diesel commodity prices and duty increased costs by a further 3.2 percentage points... “Diesel is around 32% of operating costs. With fuel prices rising and becoming increasingly volatile, we strongly recommend those companies that have not already done so, to implement a mechanism that links diesel prices to rates,” said RHA Director of Policy Jack Semple. “Customers can be reluctant to agree to such terms but we would urge them to recognise the importance such mechanisms can have for the sustainability of their haulage suppliers” ... “Operating costs are not simply about diesel. It is clear from our survey that other costs have also risen and this should be acknowledged. Overhead costs can be a particularly important area for customers to recognise. In looking ahead to the coming year, it seems that the only way haulage costs are going to move is upwards, with fuel, truck, driver and insurance costs all under pressure,” Semple said...
