2011 Volkswagen Golf Reviews

The 2011 VW Golf has a powerful engines and a near-luxury cabin that reviewers say is worth the Golf’s high price. The 2011 Golf also has a diesel option that gets great fuel economy.

The Volkswagen Golf has cruised American streets since 1974. Along with the name change, VW gave the 2010 Golf a makeover. The Golf stands out within the class for its available diesel engine.

The Honda Fit will save you around $2,500 compared to the Volkswagen Golf, and averages 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, which beats the base Golf's fuel economy rating. In the name of going green, the Honda Civic Hybrid beats the Golf’s fuel economy, but matches its price. Details: 2011 Volkswagen Golf

The Golf is largely unchanged for 2011. Volkswagen hasn’t released the 2011 Golf’s pricing, but the 2010 Golf starts at $17,620 for the 2-door, 2.5-liter engine, and the four-door TDI starts at $22,959.

Outside of a few features being shuffled around, the Volkswagen Golf remains unchanged for 2011.

Compared to other vehicles in its class, the Volkswagen Golf feels positively upscale. With either trim level, four-door models gain power-reclining front seats.

The TDI models can be equipped with adaptive xenon headlights, a premium Dynaudio sound system, and a navigation system and (on four-door models) rear seat airbags.

The base 2011 Volkswagen Golf 2.5L is powered by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined for the automatic and 22/30/25 mpg for the manual.

Safety

The 2011 VW Golf's standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags. Rear-seat side airbags are unavailable on two-door models, but are optional on four-door models.

Interior Design and Special Features

The Golf is actually much nicer than the new 2011 VW Jetta sedan.

Whether you choose the two- or four-door route, the Golf's interior passenger space remains the same. Access to the two-door Golf's rear seats is made relatively painless thanks to front seats that slide easily out of the way. The split-folding rear seats bump that figure up to 46 cubes.

The 2011 Volkswagen Golf's high level of interior refinement is echoed in its composed, solid feel on the road. At highway speeds, the Volkswagen Golf is significantly quieter than other hatchbacks. The Golf's gasoline engine provides smooth power throughout the rev range.

The Volkswagen Golf can't really be called sexy, but there are some classy details baked into its three- and five-door bodies--particularly around the rear door cuts. Stacked up against the dashing new Elentra, the Volkswagen Golf doesn't necessarily look dated, just conservative. The interior's solidly designed and built, more so than VW's own Jetta sedan that shares the Golf's assembly line.

Front passenger space is ample, but the three-door's rear seats might seem a little cramped. The turbocharged Volkswagen GTI is reviewed separately.

VW to unveil Single-Seat Electric Car

Volkswagen is poised to unveil a single-seat, ultra-frugal, zero-emission electric car. The German carmaker also plans to offer a “full-service package” for customers of its electric cars by selling them power from renewable sources, Jürgen Leohold, head of research, told the Financial Times.

VW’s one-seat concept or experimental car will showcase the carmaker’s ambition to build vehicles that generate no carbon dioxide, even on a “well-to-wheel” calculation that takes into account the carbon dioxide generated by power plants.

“It’s a new kind of mobility – a new vehicle concept,” Mr Leohold said. “Also, it’s physics. If you limit a car to one person, you can make it smaller, less weight, you need less energy to transport the person, and then obviously … it can be better on CO2 and fuel efficiency”.

Mr Leohold said that the single-seater concept car, to be unveiled within weeks, was designed for limited purposes, such as commuting, and that most drivers would want a larger vehicle for longer trips.

He declined to reveal the car’s range, top speed or other details ahead of its unveiling.

VW’s research head said that the one-seater would be “even better” than the XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle, a diesel-electric plug-in hybrid capable of 313 miles per gallon which the company unveiled in January.

Mr Leohold said that the car’s CO2 count “depends on what kind of electricity you put in the battery”, but if powered from renewable sources it would be “zero”.

Single-passenger vehicles are a rarity in the car industry apart from niche products such as the Segway scooter – which is prohibited from roads in many countries – or the ill-fated Sinclair C5, a British-designed electric tricycle launched in 1985 that flopped because of safety and other concerns.

2011 Volkswagen CC sedans come very well-equipped

2011 Volkswagen CC -The top-end model is powered by VW's VR6 3.6-liter, only available with 4Motion all-wheel drive and good for 280 horsepower. It pays for the power with a thirst 17/25 mpg city/highway and 20 mpg combined. Some will find even the front seating position a bit awkward because they're positioned low relative to the high door line. Raising the seats just compromises headroom.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2011 Volkswagen CC is a four-passenger sedan that is offered in five trim levels. Starting with the base 2.0T Sport, standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, full power accessories, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control, air-conditioning, a trip computer, hill-hold assist, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with multifunction controls, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, 12-way adjustable front seats and split-folding rear seats. The 2.0T Lux trim augments the Sport model by adding 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, dual-zone climate control, brushed aluminum interior trim and a navigation system. The VR6 4Motion Executive trim features a more powerful V6 engine and all-wheel drive, along with polished 18-inch wheels, headlight washers, heated outside mirrors, steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles, a power rear sunshade, parking sensors, driver seat memory, leather sport seats and a premium 10-speaker audio system.

The 2011 Volkswagen CC offers buyers the choice of two powertrains: front-wheel drive with a turbocharged inline-4 and all-wheel drive with a V6. Sport trim models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed automated manual transmission (DSG) is available as an option. Other trim levels featuring the 2.0-liter turbo are only offered with the DSG automatic. The 3.6-liter V6 engine is only available on the all-wheel-drive VR6 4Motion Executive. The EPA estimates fuel economy for the DSG automatic at 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 25 mpg in combined driving.

Safety
All Volkswagen CCs come standard with antilock disc brakes (with brake assist), stability and traction control, hill-hold assist, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. Last year's optional rear-seat side airbags have been discontinued.
It received five stars for front-passenger side crash protection and four stars for rear-passenger side protection.

Interior Design and Special Features
Rear seat headroom is limited by the sloping roof line, so taller rear passengers will find themselves slouching to fit, but average-sized adults should find these seats supportive and comfortable, with ample legroom.

While the strong, sleek appearance of the 2011 Volkswagen CC might suggest sport sedan, it's not quite that. Most of the lineup—especially the four-cylinder models—ride quite well, and lavish interior trims feel luxury-car caliber; the interior is tight and serene, too.
Backseat space isn't passable for adults, for head room reasons, while the front-seat position is, for lack of terse terms, a bit odd.

Volkswagen hasn't skimped on features in the Volkswagen CC sedans; all of them, even the base Sport, come very well-equipped. The Volkswagen CC is available in Sport, Lux, and Executive models, with Sport and Lux models getting the four-cylinder engine and the Executive Linkupgrading to the VR6 and 4Motionn all-wheel drive.

The navigation system in the Volkswagen CC is an all-new unit this year, while the top Dynaudio sound system is now only offered on the top Executive VR6

2011 VW Polo GTI Overviews

vw ti
VW Polo GTI is back. The list of high-tech features runs through the new Polo GTI like a common theme.

It ensures that the Polo GTI’s power is cleanly transferred to the road, even in tight serpentine curves. Serving the same purpose are the low-profile tyres (215/40 R17 87V) on alloy wheels in GTI-typical 5-hole Denver styling (7Jx17), whose look the new top Polo shares with the Golf GTI.

This system, standard equipment on the Polo GTI, accesses existing sensor data such as steering wheel angle, yaw rate and wheel speeds. The effect: more safety and driving fun, because the Polo GTI steers even more precisely with XDS.

I really want someone to explain the premium between Volkswagen's Mark VI Golf GTI five-door and its new Polo GTI and -- more to the point -- why I should pay it. I remain firmly of the opinion there's only one car under $100,000 that does so much better, and that's a Mark VI Golf GTI.

There's the same tactile VW GTI steering wheel, the red stitching, the standard tartan upholstery. Similarly lowered, and with its own suspension settings, the Polo shares the Golf's XDL (extended electronic differential lock), which all but arrests understeer when the car is tipped hard into a corner. With the Polo version, you get the seven-speed version of the twin-clutch automatic DSG or nothing.

The VW GTI badge alone gives this car loads of street cred. Transmission choices include a standard six-speed manual or a more finicky six-speed dual clutch unit. Unfortunately there’s no all-wheel drive option, which means this model is limited to front-wheel drive. Buyers considering the sporty Honda Civic Si or the MazdaSpeed3, or possibly even the MINI Cooper, should definitely book a test drive of the 2011 VW GTI.

The MINI also can’t match the "VW GTI" on performance; a similar performing turbocharged Cooper S is around $7,000 more than the Volkswagen.

It’s 13 years since Volkswagen first attempted to sprinkle the magic of its GTI badge over a model other than the Golf. For starters, the most powerful Polo – until the arrival of a rumoured flagship R model – again mimics its upsized sibling with signature GTI touches. There’s the black honeycomb grille with red horizontal strips, red brake callipers and even identical 17-inch alloy wheels. Even if you opt for the $28,990 five-door, the value looks outstanding when you consider the Polo GTI’s natural rivals: Renault Sport Clio, $36,490; Mini Cooper S, $40,500; Alfa Romeo MiTo QV, $34,990.

Keen drivers may be disappointed the Polo GTI comes with only brake and accelerator pedals – the only transmission being a DSG dual-clutch auto. Employing both a supercharger – for lowspeed response – and a turbocharger – for shove at medium to high engine speeds – makes the Polo GTI both fast and frugal. There’s agile balance, enthusiastic corner turn-in and tenacious tyre grip when exiting tighter bends.

In terms of practicality – still important in hot hatches – the GTI, as with all Polos, offers good rearseat legroom for its class size. However, a repositioned battery – to improve weight distribution – reduces boot space from 280 litres to 204 litres.

2012 VW Beetle Reviews

The car will launch in mainstay-selling 2-door hatchback sedan form. Like the car it replaces, the 2012 VW Beetle will be built exclusively at the company’s Puebla, Mexico complex, which is also the only plant in the company’s global system that turns out the Jetta compact sedan and wagon. What could change is the platform itself, as the 2012 VW Beetle is expected to move to the much-modified architecture of the larger, redesigned 2011 Jetta sedan. This could account for the fresh Beetle's larger dimensions. That height reduction stems from a flatter roofline that will be a major visual change for the 2012 VW Beetle.
The 2012 VW Beetle arrives in dealerships this fall. Volkswagen has combined retro and modern design cues in styling the 2012 Beetle.

The 2012 VW Beetle is also a bigger car, measuring 3.3 inches wider and 6 inches longer than its predecessor. Available features include 19-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof and a rear spoiler.
The prior-generation Beetle's interior aged remarkably well, but it was time for an update, and the redesigned 2012 Beetle provides it. The base 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine works with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Both the diesel and turbocharged gas engine team with a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 2012 VW Beetle will be fully redesigned. Highlights include slightly more aggressive styling, an updated interior and the return of turbocharged and diesel engines.

Then there was the vehicle sequel, the 1998 New Beetle. Now for 2012, there's finally a new Beetle to replace the New Beetle, though it will just be called the Beetle. With the 2012 Beetle, Volkswagen has taken a cautious approach in terms of design. The new Beetle coupe is 3.3 inches wider and 6 inches longer than the outgoing model. Inside, VW has drawn upon elements from the original Beetle, such as incorporating two gloveboxes.

The 2012 VW Beetle will first be available in the limited-edition Black Turbo launch edition model, which features the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine matched to VW's dual-clutch automated manual transmission. Transmission choices, depending on the engine, include a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic and a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual.
Later in the model year the Beetle TDI will debut, boasting VW's clean and thrifty (estimated at 40 mpg for highway fuel mileage) 140-hp turbodiesel engine.

2012 VW Eos Review

VW Eos
2012 VW Eos The front-wheel-drive car comes standard with Volkswagen's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Redesigned controls -- both along the steering wheel and center dashboard -- differentiate the 2012 VW Eos from earlier years. A leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls is standard. Last year's 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder carries over. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard. Last year's automatic VW Eos got 29 mpg highway.

For 2012, the VW Eos front fascia more closely resembles the new Jetta's, while the interior receives VW's next-generation infotainment and climate controls. The 2012 Volkswagen Eos does much the same thing with its retractable hardtop convertible roof or unique built-in sunroof. The VW Eos tends to be forgotten among the convertible ranks despite its many advantages.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2012 VW Eos is a five-passenger convertible with a retractable hardtop roof that features an integrated sunroof. The standard eight-speaker sound system features an auxiliary audio jack, an iPod interface, HD radio, satellite radio, a CD player and a touchscreen interface.
The Lux adds different 17-inch wheels, parking sensors, power-folding mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, automatic wipers, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a navigation system (HD radio is deleted). Every 2012 VW Eos is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that sends 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels through a six-speed automated manual gearbox known as DSG. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

Safety
In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing, the VW Eos earned the top rating of "Good" for both frontal-offset and side-impact tests.

Driving Impressions
The 2012 VW Eos is for drivers who want a relaxed touring convertible.
2012 VW Eos Luxury Convertible Coupe comes powered with either a 2 liter engine turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 2.0-liter diesel engine. The VW Eos with the 2.0 liter engine turbocharged four-cylinder engine produce 208-horsepower and the 2.0 liter diesel engine offers 138-hp power.

2011 Volkswagen Phaeton

Volkswagen Phaeton
The Volkswagen Phaeton is offered with two wheelbases as well as two rear seating versions (three seat bench or two individual seats). This radiator trim has a decisive impact on the styling of the 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton. The new bumper design complements the radiator grille and headlight styling. Even the front fog lights now shine in LED technology.

Volkswagen has updated its Phaeton flagship for the second time in its short life, reaffirming the lackluster opinion of the car in the full-size luxury sedan market. Coming as standard across the range is a 4Motion all-wheel drive system, air suspension, bi-xenon headlights, 18 inch alloy wheels, 4-zone air-conditioning, 18-way adjustable seats and leather and Alcantara trim.
Now, if only Volkswagen can get the pricing right. When Volkswagen's flagship Volkswagen Phaeton was last sold in the U.S., it was almost universally overlooked, selling just 3,354 total cars in its brief 2003-2006 stint in the American market.

Interior changes
The 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton includes a new steering wheel, color electronic display ahead of the driver, new trim throughout and VW first optional Google Maps with the RNS810 satellite navigation system. Phaeton technology

The Volkswagen Phaeton will retain advanced technology, such as 4MOTION all-wheel drive, a continuously damping and adjustable air ride suspension (CDC), 18-way adjustable leather seats, eight airbags, satellite navigation and laminated glass throughout for reduced noise and optimal interior climate control.

Pick the Volkswagen Phaeton for you
VW will offer the Phaeton in two different wheelbase lengths, with a difference of 120 mm.
For those seeking a significant bump in power, VW also offers a 6.0-liter W12 engine, cranking out 444 horsepower.

Where will the Volkswagen Phaeton be sold?
The VW Phaeton was last sold in the U.S. for the 2006 model year, but VW was forced to pull the plug on the Volkswagen Phaeton after the U.S. market failed to embrace a $60,000+ VW model, selling only a couple thousand units in two years.

2011 VW Touareg Hybrid Reviews

2011 VW Touareg Hybrid
The highly anticipated VW Touareg Hybrid SUV finally made it to market this year. The 2011 VW Touareg Hybrid, like its gasoline-only and diesel counterparts, is part of a second generation of the Touareg line. As such, the SUV is lighter, quieter, and nicer (according to some reviewers) than previous Touareg models.

The combined output is between 375 hp and 380 hp. Motor Trend reported that the SUV hybrid offered impressive engine power (425 pound-feet of torque), “making it the most powerful drivetrain offered in the new Touareg.” As such, the Touareg Hybrid has a towing capacity of 7700 pounds.

For fuel economy, this SUV hybrid gets about 28.7 mpg combined city/highway. Volkswagen says the Touareg Hybrid offers 0-to-62-mph time of 6.5 seconds and a 149 mph top speed. The Touareg will be offered in 12 feature package combinations. The Touareg Hybrid shares technology and other elements with its cousin, the 2011 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid.

A supercharged engine and hybrid system make the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid the most powerful of the Touareg model lineup, without sacrificing fuel economy. Volkswagen's Touareg Hybrid shows up with jaw-dropping technology under the hood, and an impressive cabin tech suite as well. The full model name, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Supercharged Hybrid, includes a few terms not usually found together. Yes, this Touareg not only gets gas-electric hybrid propulsion, but also a supercharger on the engine.

Current Touareg models include the supercharged hybrid, a 3-liter TDI V-6, and a 3.6-liter gasoline V-6. The mundane gas-only Touareg comes up short with 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

Even the TDI Touareg can't match that torque number.
Merely letting off the brake lets the Touareg creep forward under electric power. The Touareg Hybrid comes standard with four-wheel drive, a completely automatic system that defaults to a 40 percent front-60 percent rear torque split. But switching it to off-road mode merely adjusts the traction control and drivetrain programs; the Touareg Hybrid's conventional suspension sits at a fixed height.

Volkswagen says the Touareg Hybrid has a ground clearance of 7.9 inches and can ford water to a depth of 19.7 inches. Although the four-wheel-drive system helps in cornering, the Touareg Hybrid shows typical SUV handling.
Rather than creases, the Touareg Hybrid features impressions of lines, just a smooth pinch in the sides.

Positioned atop the VW lineup, the five-seat Touareg competes with luxury crossovers such as the Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLK and Lincoln MKX.

This makes the Touareg the Volkswagen brand's first hybrid.

Chrome lower accents run the length of the doors, while the rear bumper carries shapely tailpipes and a black lower garnish.

Interior
VW laid out the Touareg's cabin fairly conventionally. A 6.5-inch touch-screen display with stereo readouts is standard. Thanks to some 5 inches' extra length, the Touareg's backseat is significantly roomier.

Touareg Hybrid
The Touareg Hybrid combines a 3.0-liter V-6 with an electric motor for a combined 375 hp and 428 pounds-feet of torque. Towing capacity is 7,700 pounds — far exceeding what the hybrid Lexus RX 450h or Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid can accommodate.

Rather than the electrically variable transmissions many hybrids employ, the Touareg Hybrid has a specialized version of the Touareg's eight-speed auto.

2012 Passat also be available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged

2012 Passat
The Volkswagen Passat will be redesigned for 2012. There's a lot in store for the 2012 Passat. Buyers can choose between a five speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission (DSG) is standard. Now 50-state emissions legal, the 140-hp TDI makes the Passat the only mainstream family sedan available with a diesel.

The 2012 Passat is facing a kind of perfect storm of skepticism from long-time fans of theLink brand. Volkswagen has wasted no chance to tell the world that the company's newest sedan will be custom-tailored to the American market, with styling and packaging tweaks designed to set the vehicle apart from its European counterpart. That trend kicked off with the 2011 Jetta – a vehicle that sacrificed interior materials and suspension refinement to meet a lower price point while growing larger to accommodate American tastes.

Does the Passat share a similar fate? That lead many onlookers (ourselves included) to conclude that in creating its new mid-sized sedan, Volkswagen had simply supersized the Jetta.

There's no denying that the 2012 Passat is cut from the same design cloth as the 2011 Jetta. The look is right at home on the larger Passat, with its slightly aggressive headlights, three-bar grille and scowling hood. No matter where your eyes rest, they're bound to fall on a line that runs nearly uninterrupted around the entire vehicle. Base models wear 16-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, though 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloy rollers are also available depending on the trim specification. For 2012, Volkswagen has built almost four additional inches into the Passat, and most of that length has found its way into the rear foot well. One of the biggest highlights of the 2012 Passat interior is its sound system. Volkswagen teamed up with Fender to create a nine-speaker audio system that pushes 400 watts of power. Volkswagen has worked to slim its option sheet to just 16 buildable combinations down from 128 possibilities, and as a result, long-time Passat fans will find a few notable omissions. Buyers will no longer be able to enjoy a wagon version of the vehicle. Additionally, the 2012 Passat is only available with three engines. Those include a 2.5-liter gasoline five-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque as well as a 3.6-liter gasoline V6 with 280 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of twist.

The Passat will also be available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder with 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. We're happy to report that Volkswagen has left some quirkiness in the Passat line by offering the 2.0 TDI engine with both the DSG and a six-speed manual option.

We were able to spend time in both a 2.5-liter, automatic-equipped Passat and its 2.0-TDI, DSG counterpart in mixed driving. Though the big German sedan weighs in between 3,300 and 3,400 pounds depending on engine and transmission choices, neither engine has a particularly hard time moving the Passat in any conditions. The five-cylinder gasoline engine offers similar power to four-cylinder options in both the Camry and Accord, and as such, there's enough grunt on hand to keep the vehicle on pace with the rest of traffic. VW says that while the EPA hasn't finished its fuel economy evaluation for the Passat, the company expects the 2.5-liter powered sedan to see 21 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg on the highway in manual guise and 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway with the autobox of our tester. Those numbers put the base entry around three mpg behind the Hyundai Sonata on the combined scale and 1.5 mpg behind a comparably equipped Honda Accord.

As a result, the TDI-equipped Passat feels and drives like a sedan you want to spend time in. As in the Jetta TDI, the 2.0-liter engine is quiet both inside and out, producing marginally more engine noise than its petrol counterparts. We encountered just over 40 mpg combined during our time behind the wheel of the Passat TDI.

Volkswagen hasn't announced pricing for the 2012 Passat just yet, but the company says that it's aiming for a price point in the low-$20K range with topped-out models landing in the lower- to mid-$30K range.

Volkswagen's Passat replacement, still called the Passat, grows to large-midsize, will sticker for as little as $20,000 and gets an optional 2.0-liter turbodiesel. VW's spin on the Accord-sized and -priced 2012 Passat is that it represents "accessible German engineering." It's a key component in VW's quest to sell 800,000 cars and sport/utilities in the United States by 2018.

VW, exclusive of Audi, sold about 260,000 cars and sport/utilities here last year, and expects to sell about 300,000 here in '11.
To appeal to a wider audience, mostly Toyota, Honda and Hyundai owners, VW is replacing the smallish-midsize Passat with an Accord-sized 191.7-inch long four-door sedan on a 110.4-inch wheelbase. VW claims best-in-class rear-seat legroom. Strictly speaking, the new Passat doesn't share its platform with anything else sold in North America, though VW has commonized its transverse-engine models (which is just about everything) into the MQB component set.
Base engine will be the unimpressive 170-horsepower 2.5-liter inline five, the Jetta's volume engine, supplied out of Mexico. Just like the 2.0-liter base '11 Jetta, the '12 Passat will start with a low-priced version featuring the 2.5-liter five, for about $20,000, "a breakthrough price for VW," one executive says.
Assembly begins in VW's new Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant later this year.

Bosch to get VW contract for EV batteries

German automotive supplier Bosch is set to receive a major contract to develop electric car batteries for Volkswagen, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

Awarding Stuttgart-based Bosch the contract would give VW a second battery supplier next to Japan's Sanyo. Both VW and Bosch declined to comment on the matter.

Volkswagen has said it plans to launch all-electric vehicles in 2013 and expects these zero-emission vehicles to account for 3 percent of its sales by 2018.

2012 Volkswagen GLI

2012 Volkswagen GLI
2012 Volkswagen jetta GLI
After a two-year hiatus, the VW GLI returns as an all-new model based on the recently redesigned Jetta.

Seeing an opportunity, Volkswagen filled that void years ago with its GLI, a Jetta fitted with the GTI's performance-oriented engine and suspension tuning. Granted, the new Jetta offers a roomier backseat and is still a nice car. Thankfully, 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI undoes many of the base model Jetta's changes. The GLI's interior is nicer, and out back there's a more sophisticated multilink rear suspension for improved handling. As with the previous GLI, the 2012 Volkswagen GLI should be an appealing niche choice. Given the Jetta GLI's size and price, we also think the Kia Optima SX is worth serious consideration as well.

The 2012 Volkswagen GLI is a front-wheel-drive four-door sedan available in two trim levels: 2.0T and Autobahn.

The GLI Autobahn adds 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, heated windshield-washer nozzles, automatic climate control, a cooling glovebox, heated front seats, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery and a nine-speaker audio system. Every 2012 GLI comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI will display the basic model with a sporty appearance, the interior high-oriented, higher performance, and a list of standard equipment is impressive for users. The new Jetta GLI adds 18-inch alloy wheels, fender branded audio system, sunroof, dual zone climate control, and V-Tex leatherette seats. 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI claims will get 315 plus RNS navigation system, keyless entry and push-button start.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI with comfort and technological sophistication of the Jetta that prioritizes performance is quite aggressive. Jetta GLI offers exceptional features, sunroof, dual zone climate control, heated V-Tex leatherette seat and Fender ® Premium Audio System. Volkswagen Jetta GLI offers sports engine with gasoline turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder, producing 200 horsepower. Jetta GLI offers a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment.

Volkswagen to make electric cars in China with FAW

Top European automaker Volkswagen said on Wednesday that it plans to build electric cars in China with FAW Group under new brand Kaili, becoming the first foreign automaker to announce concrete plans to make electric cars in the country.

The electric vehicle would be built by FAW Volkswagen, and China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology had certified the vehicle on May 3, Volkswagen said in an email to Reuters.

"With the certification of FAW-Volkswagen's Kaili electric vehicle, Volkswagen Group makes serious commitments to striving for indigenous innovation with its joint ventures."

Volkswagen would provide attractive and affordable electric vehicles for Chinese consumers, he added.

Volkswagen to introduce plug-in hybrids by 2013

Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn has finally confirmed the company will introduce plug-in hybrid models by 2013. As far as hybrid technology goes, Volkswagen has been a bit behind the mark, but now it’s time for catch-up.

At the recent International Vienna Motor Symposium, Mr Winterkorn revealed the company’s future hybrid plans. He said there would be a “range of important models with plug-in hybrid technology starting in 2013/14″.

Although definite models were not mentioned, reports suggest plug-in hybrids of the next-generation Mk7 Golf and, similarly, the new Audi A3 which will use the same platform, are likely candidates. Both cars will be developed on Volkswagen’s upcoming MQB front-wheel drive platform.

Mr Winterkorn said Volkswagen was very excited about the prospect of the plug-in hybrid, expressing that the technology combines the best of both worlds.

“The plug-in hybrid offers precisely what many customers expect: unlimited internal combustion engine performance combined with attractive electric mobility ranges in everyday driving.”

Volkswagen is not interested in producing a full-electric version of its models however. It believes the large battery pack required for a plug-in provides ample electric vehicle efficiency, as electric-only ranges are within most city driving limits of around 32km anyway.

At the same time, if long trips are needed the petrol motor can come in to provide long ranges, and the tank can also be refilled with ease, compared with an EV that takes several hours to recharge.

Overall consumption of the plug-in Golf is expected to dip below the 2.5L/100km mark.

2011 Volkswagen Eos Reviews

2011 Volkswagen Eos
2011 VW Eos is Volkswagen’s inexpensive alternative to the BMW 3-series convertible or the Lexus IS convertible. It’s possible that you’ve never heard of the Eos, Volkswagen’s midsize convertible. Ford Mustang? Mini Cooper? The 2011 Volkswagen Eos isn’t cheap; the base model starts at $32,940. If you can afford a more expensive car, try convertibles like the BMW 3-Series and the Lexus IS. The BMW 1-Series convertible also falls in this category, but it’s smaller and less expensive. The base price is $34,500.

Beyond the talented top, the Eos provides an enjoyable drive thanks in part to the standard turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. The Mini Cooper?
The 2011 Volkswagen Eos is a front-wheel-drive, two-door hardtop convertible with seating for four. The Lux model adds daytime running lights, power-folding heated outside mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview and driver's outside mirrors, burled walnut cabin accents, leather upholstery, power passenger seat, power front seat lumbar adjustments and an easy-entry function for rear passengers.

Options for the Komfort are few and include ground effects (lower body skirting), a rear lip spoiler and 18-inch wheels. All 2011 Volkswagen Eos models are powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which makes 200 hp and 207 pound-feet of torque. Lux models are available with the dual-clutch automated manual only.

The fuel economy ratings for the 2011 Eos with the manual are 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.
Standard on all VW Eos models are antilock disc brakes, stability control and front seat side airbags.
In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing, the 2011 VW Eos earned the top rating of "Good" for both frontal-offset and side-impact tests.

The chief attraction of the Eos is its five-piece retractable hardtop.
The 2011 Volkswagen Eos is designed for those who want a relaxed touring convertible. Both transmissions are nicely executed, but we suspect the typical Eos buyer will be happier with the automated manual. As expected, the retractable hardtop provides coupelike isolation when the weather prevents top-down motoring.

Landing somewhere between the budget rent-a-car cruiser convertibles, like the Chrysler 200 and the Volkswagen New Beetle, and drop-top sports cars like the Mazda Miata or Audi TT, is the 2011 Volkswagen Eos.

The Eos is so often omitted because it's bland. All 2011 Volkswagen Eos convertibles come with the same engine: a 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. If you're in the front seat, the 2011 Volkswagen Eos is a very comfortable place; the seating and driving position is just a little more laid-back than in Volkswagen's other cars, and the seats themselves feel a bit better-bolstered than in its lower-priced models like the Golf. The 2011 Volkswagen Eos comes in Komfort and Lux models, with some high-end options like a sport package, Dynaudio surround system, and hard-drive-based navigation with music storage all available on the Lux.
