Volkswagen Bulli Concept

Volkswagen has releases Bulli Concept, which will debut at the Geneva auto show..

The new Bulli measures 3.99 m in length, 1.75 m in width and 1.70 m in height. In relation to its width it has a wide track (1.50 m front and rear), and very short overhangs at the front and back. Its kerb weight is 1,450 kg.

The Bulli is equipped with an electric motor that generates 114 horsepower, along with a lithium-ion battery. VW said the Bulli has a range of 186 miles — surprisingly high versus most EVs. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds and has a top speed of 87 mph.

Inside the cabin you will see a removable iPad which serves as the multi-function touchscreen on the center console and handles matters such as navigation. No tachometer is needed and no gear shift is present either. There's a rotary switch on the dash to engage the forward and reverse gears.

  • Bulli has six seats: three on a front bench seat (which can be folded) and three on the rear bench which can be folded flat to maximise loadspace
  • When all six seating locations are occupied, a 370 litre loadspace is available; with seats folded, the cargo capacity of the 1.8 metre long interior increases to 1,600 litres
  • A removable iPad in the centre console serves as a multifunctional touchscreen. Along with Internet-based applications and the media centre, it also handles phone and navigation functions
  • There is no tachometer (unnecessary with an electric motor) nor a centre console, nor gear lever. The latter is replaced by a rotary switch to the right of the driver, which is used to select forward and reverse gears. A push button in the same switch is used to activate and switch off the motor. Another rotary switch to the left of the driver is used to control the lighting functions
  • Original design of the Volkswagen bus comes from that of Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon. On 23 April 1947 Pon sketched a compact bus - a simple side view of a radically shortened public omnibus placed over the wheelbase of a Beetle with an ‘m' for ‘motor' written on it. This became the basis for the original Transporter or T1 which was launched in 1950.

Volkswagen has unveiled an all-new concept, the ‘Bulli', at the Geneva Motor Show. It is a development of the Microbus concept which made its debut ten years ago in 2001 and a new generation of Volkswagen people carrier - the first of which broke cover back in 1950 with the production of the first Transporter.

More compact than the 2001 concept vehicle, the new Bulli is powered by an electric motor and fitted with six seats and infotainment control via iPad. It is front-engined and front-wheel drive. On a wheelbase measuring 2.62 metres - slightly longer than that of a Golf (2.58 m) - the new Bulli measures 3.99 m in length, 1.75 m in width and 1.70 m in height. In relation to its width it has a wide track (1.50 m front and rear), and very short overhangs at the front and back. Its kerb weight is 1,450 kg.

This includes the weight of the energy source: a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is concealed in the sandwiched floor behind the sills and powers the Bulli's electric motor. This engine produces 85 kW (115 PS) of power and 260 Nm (192 lbs ft) of torque and the theoretical driving range is up to 300 km (186 miles) - a high value for an electric car. With this electric motor, the new Bulli can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds and go on to an electronically limited top speed of 87 mph. The concept could also accommodate, as an alternative power source, one of Volkswagen's efficient petrol and diesel direct injection engines.

Like the original Samba bus, the Bulli presented in Geneva has two-tone paint and a distinctive ‘V' on the bonnet; its 18-inch alloy wheels with stylised chrome hubcaps are another tribute to the Samba bus.

Inside the Bulli has six seats: three on a front bench seat (which can be split and folded) and three on the rear bench which can be folded flat to maximise loadspace - or turn into a bed in the true spirit of the iconic campervan. When all six seating locations are occupied, a 370 litre loadspace is available; with seats folded, the cargo capacity of the 1.8 metre long interior increases to 1,600 litres.

A removable iPad in the centre console serves as a multifunctional touchscreen. Along with Internet-based applications and the media centre, it also handles phone and navigation functions. There is no tachometer (unnecessary with an electric motor) nor a centre console, nor gear lever. The latter is replaced by a rotary switch to the right of the driver, which is used to select forward and reverse gears. A push button in the same switch is used to activate and switch off the motor. Another rotary switch to the left of the driver is used to control the lighting functions.

Such hi-tech equipment is of course a far cry from the original Volkswagen bus, the design for which came from that of Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon. On 23 April 1947, Pon sketched a compact bus - a simple side view of a radically shortened public omnibus placed over the wheelbase of a Beetle with an ‘m' for ‘motor' written on it. This was to become the basis for the original Transporter or T1 which was launched in 1950 - and is still popular to this day.

And How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?

How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

Isn’t it funny how you find out about things? She was thinking back as she folded the clean towels. A friend made a casual comment. She asked where she heard that. The friend said, well, someone said…and slowly the pieces began to fall into place.

Sometimes she still didn’t believe it. She never thought it would happen to her. She doesn’t even know the details. But it did. Trust has always been hard for her, in any situation. But for someone she actually trusted, to let her down, well, it was almost unbearable. She vowed, again, to never trust another human. Doesn’t it say that in the bible somewhere anyway? She’s sure one of her overzealous, pseudo religious, so-called ‘friends’ could quote it to her. They usually speak from both sides of their mouth, always spouting off about how she is supposed to be living her life when all along they should be practicing what they so self-righteously preach. Oh well, enough on that. Who is she to judge? It would make her the same as they are and that’s the last thing she’d wish on anyone.

She sighs and keeps on, like always. She thinks of all that’s happened and she really doesn’t have it bad at all, considering. Actually nothing much changed. Unless, of course, you count her metamorphosis. She became a tin man. Not a strong, sleek robot that can do anything. She’s a tin man like the one in the Wizard of Oz. She’s looking, not for Oz, but for a pattern. She needs to knit herself a new heart. Surely there’s instructions in a book or maybe on the Internet. If she knits it tight enough it won’t ever break again.
How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.

My sister and I and maybe Callye decided to do a little project this year. Once a month we are going to send each other something. It can be, but doesn’t have to be handmade. Since I was going to Lubbock on Saturday I planned and took my stuff for my sister, with me. I gave her the brown cowl, for January and a set of dishcloths and a potholder for February. That wasn’t in the order I made them but I don’t guess that matters! In return I got a beautiful pair of handbeaded earrings. That’s my January. I don’t know what February will bring yet. Now I’ve got to think of something for March!
Cowl with flower pin accent that I didn't give her! Not her style.

Two ballband dishrags and a magic potholder.
My beaded earrings. Green is my favorite color!

Knitayear is winding down. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year. Not many more days at all! Day 331, was February 25. I’m reluctant to go to Lubbock. It’s like going swimming. I don’t mind a bit after I get in but getting in is the problem. I know it will be a good visit and I do need to see my uncle in the hospital since he’s not doing well at all. I chose beige worsted. Saturday, day 332, is Feb 26. I can’t believe I almost forgot my haircut! Thankfully I texted last night and Carlos let me know we were on. I’m thankful he did that and thankful that Callye and the kids are going to Lubbock with me. It will be a long trip but we are all glad to see relatives and spend a little time together. All in all it’s a good trip. It was just long, especially with me driving in at 2:00 am. I’m just too old to be doing that! I picked hot pink, purple and red yarn with little puffs on it. Day 333, February 27, turned out to be a really sucky day. But even though I feel let down, I’ll live. And I’ll remember the lesson learned. It won’t happen again. Black yarn with primary colors sprinkled through is what I picked. Day 334 turns out to be a typical (bad) Monday. I do get to work at TTUHSC, so that’s good. I debated all day whether to go to the shrimp fest and finally decided. It was fun, and I was stuffed! I used yarn that is turquoise blue and yellow. All was going well until I drove home. I’ll have to write down February 28 as the day I tore up Bryce’s car. I hit something. Or it hit me. I never even saw it but it did some damage. I didn’t realize how much til I got home. I’m so disappointed in myself. I should have paid more attention and been more careful. I’ll get it fixed for him as soon as I can. I’m hoping this isn’t an indication of the week to come. I need something good to happen!
I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees,
And misty memories of days gone by.
We could never see tomorrow, no one said a word about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?

CAR SPORTS MODIFICATION

CAR SPORTS MODIFICATION

It may be surprising to learn that there is a better way of setting the rearview mirrors on the car. A quick test is that if one looks in your side mirrors and the side of the car is seen, it means that the mirror's capacity is not being used. Many people notably have a huge overlap between the side and center rear view mirrors, this is important. When the side mirrors are spread, no information is lost about what is present behind. Although valuable insight must be gained regarding what is present beside. Many driving schools recommend this new method; it also includes the BMW Performance Center in South Carolina.

What are Blind Spots?

Blind spots are the areas in which a vehicle cannot be seen from either the driver's secondary vision, inside mirror or the side mirrors. Many drivers set their side mirrors in a way that they can just barely see the side of their car in the mirrors. By setting the side mirrors in a proper way and also using the rearview mirror can reduce the blind spots. However the size of these blind spots is still capable of hiding a vehicle.

How is Blind spot caused?

Perhaps one needs to change lanes or merge into traffic every time when while driving. These maneuvers of routine nature can cause dangerous situations because every vehicle has blind spots. According to a survey, there is an estimate of 630,000 lane change and merge crashes every year causing nearly 225 fatalities. Although not needed to say but the simple act of changing lanes or merging requires precautions and practice. Blind spots are also called blind zones.

How to eliminate blind spots

Following are some of the useful ways to remove blind spots;
- One should lean his head over in a way that it almost touches the driver's window. Then the side mirror should be positioned on the car's left side so one can just see the rear or the car or the quarter panel in the mirror. It must be noted that this will have the mirror positioned farther out than one did not possibly had it before.

- The center rearview mirror can be adjusted in a position that it faces the rear window's center.

- The head can be leaned to the right for aligning it with the center of the car. An example can be just between the two front seats at a considerable normal height. The right side mirror can be positioned from there so the rear quarter panel of the passenger side in can be seen in the mirror.

- It can be noted while driving that a car passing by begins in the center of the rearview mirror. As it approaches, it moves to the side of the center rear view mirror. It appears on the side mirror at the same time. Because the mirrors are overlapped, this would mean that that there is no rear blind spot.

- It can also be noted that the side mirrors will now capture a great extra amount of view that is in the lanes quickly next to the car. Turning the head for needed before for ensure if there was nothing in the lanes next to the car prior to changing lanes. But now, the side mirrors have much better productivity and better job of covering this blind spot on the sides.

2011 Toyota RAV4 Review

Reviewers call the 2011 Toyota RAV4 one of the most practical and family-friendly SUVs you can buy. The 2011 Toyota RAV4, reviewers say, continues that tradition.

The optional third-row seat also helps the RAV4 stand out. While the RAV4 launched the segment, the competition is starting to catch up. If you like the RAV4, reviewers say you’ll likely be happy with it. The RAV4 is most often compared to the Honda CR-V. Hovever, compared to a four-cylinder RAV4, the CR-V is tough competition.

It beats the RAV4’s base highway fuel economy and has a more up-to-date interior, with more standard features.

The 2011 Toyota RAV4 crossover SUV is available with a fuel-efficient 2.5 liter, four-cylinder engine that racks up a healthy 22 city/28 highway MPG and a slightly less gas stingy V-6 that still logs in an impressive 27 highway MPG.

Pricing should be around $22,750 MSRP for the base model Rav4--All RAV4s buyers can choose between either a front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The smaller engine has a four-speed automatic standard, while the larger engine has a five-speed automatic as standard and that is available on the smaller engine as an option.

The Base Model RAV4 has a suggested MSRP of $21,925 for the FWD version. The Toyota RAV4 has the most interior room-seating and storage-of any vehicle in its class.
Designed to blend comfort with performance, the 2011 RAV4 features four-wheel independent suspension, a rigid body structure, and enhanced power steering. The positives of the RAV4 are many.

That said, the RAV4 is one of the older designs in the compact crossover segment. The 2011 Toyota RAV4 is a midsize crossover SUV. There are three trim levels available: base, Sport and Limited. The base RAV4 comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, a limited-slip differential (front-drive models only), air-conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, height-adjustable driver seat and a six-speaker stereo with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The base V6 4WD adds 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels.

The RAV4 Sport comes standard with 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels, color-keyed bumpers and sportier suspension tuning. The Sport Appearance package that is available on all four-cylinder and V6 4WD Sport models deletes the spare tire mounted on the rear cargo door (the model features run-flat tires instead) and adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated mirrors and chrome exterior details.

All V6 models add hill-start assist and hill-descent control, which are also standard for the RAV4 four-cylinder with the optional third-row seat.

An Upgrade Value package for the base RAV4 includes a sunroof, roof rails, privacy glass, 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels, six-disc CD changer, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, upgraded cloth upholstery and a cargo cover. The Premium package available on the Sport and Limited trim levels (though not with the third-row seat) adds leather upholstery and an eight-way power driver seat with power lumbar support. V6-powered models can be equipped with a tow package.
The 2011 Toyota RAV4 comes standard with a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine that delivers 179 hp and 172 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy for this model with front-wheel drive is 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined, and 21/27/24 with 4WD.

The V6 achieves an impressive 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive RAV4, and these ratings change only by 1 mpg less for EPA highway when the 4WD model is selected.

Every RAV4 trim level can be matched with either front-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, whiplash-reducing front headrests, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are standard on every 2011 Toyota RAV4. The RAV4 also performs well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, earning the top rating of "Good" in both the frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. The RAV4's interior boasts a clean design with large, simple controls and lots of storage space. Overall interior quality is acceptable, but the Chevy Equinox and Honda CR-V make the RAV's interior look too insubstantial and budget-oriented.

Nevertheless, the "Toyota RAV4" is a model of practicality. The rear seats recline and can slide fore and aft to optimize passenger space or cargo capacity. To configure the RAV4 for cargo, all you need to do is flip a lever on the second-row seats.

Automobile Industry welcomes Union Budget

The amendments related to the Finance Sector will help in streamlining operations and boosting the economy.

Dr Pawan Goenka, President, SIAM welcomed the Union Budget 2011-12, terming it as a “Reform Oriented Budget”. Hon’ble Finance Minister has talked about several reform initiatives including roadmap for Direct Taxes Code, Constitutional Amendment Bill for Goods & Services Tax (GST) which would be tabled in the current session of the Parliament and also, pilot project across 11 states for implementation of IT towards GST introduction. The amendments related to the Finance Sector will help in streamlining operations and boosting the economy.

Mr S Sandilya, Vice President, SIAM added that the increase in flow of money to the rural areas from Rs. 3,75,000 crores to Rs. 4,75,000 crores would lead to demand creation in rural areas. However, this may also lead to increase in food inflation which one needs to keep a watch on. He added that the Hon’ble FM has also initiated a lot of course corrections, for instance, direct subsidy to Kerosene customers, which would remove a lot of malpractices from the system. Increase in investment in rural warehousing and encouragement for cold storage facilities is also a welcome move. He also welcomed increased allocation to the National Clean Energy Fund and National Skills Development Fund.

Dr Goenka remarked that Hon’ble FM has given a clear message to the industry by announcing setting up of National Mission for Hybrid and Electric Hybrid vehicles. He thanked the Department of Heavy Industry for taking it up on behalf of the industry. He also talked about several fiscal measures for promoting such vehicles including introduction of 10% excise duty for Fuel cell and Hydrogen vehicles, exemption to specified parts from Basic Customs Duty and CVD along with 5% excise duty, etc. which would provide a significant incentive to promote the development, manufacturing and sale of such vehicles in India.

The Hon’ble Finance Minister has also removed certain anomalies in the excise duty structure, which SIAM has been requesting for removal, like Taxi Refund extended to vehicles with seating capacity up to 13 persons and exemption to factory-built ambulances from additional excise duty.

Dr Goenka also welcomed that the Hon’ble FM has accepted our request of not rolling back the economic stimulus package and maintaining the Central CENVAT rate. The industry, however, was expecting some rationalization of excise duty on larger cars and utility vehicles, at least removal of additional excise duty of Rs. 15,000/- from such vehicles, which was not announced.

He hoped that the implementation of all the measures announced in the Union Budget today would fuel growth of overall economic activity and have a positive impact on the automotive industry.

HYDRO-NET Project : San Fransisco Futuristic City in 2018

How do you see San Fransisco in 2018 ? Apparently IwamotoScott Architects has a totally futuristic vision of San Fransisco that made them won $10,000 grand prize in the City of The Future contest. Their winning entry was a Hydro-Net concept that includes a ?Geothermal Mushroom? at located on the top of Bernal Hill and a ?Fog Flower? on Ocean Beach. Here?s their full series of Hydro-Net concept illustrations.HYDRO-NET provides an underground arterial traffic network for hydrogen-fueled hover-cars, while simultaneously collecting, storing and distributing water and power tapped from existing aquifer and geothermal sources beneath San Francisco.

At key waterfront and neighborhood locales, HYDRO-NET emerges to form linkages between the terrestrial and subterranean worlds. Here new architectures bloom as opportunistic urban caves and outcroppings, fostering new social spaces and densified urban forms, fed by the resources and connectivity provided by HYDRO-NET.

What a stunning vision, San Fransisco already become one of the greenest cities in the US, but this vision totally remake San Fransisco into ecotopia in 2018.

Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion

I always love Zaha Hadid works. This one is chanel mobile art pavilion, a traveling art space designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, has opened in its first destination, Hong Kong. The pavilion, commissioned by Chanel head designer Karl Lagerfeld, hosts an exhibition of artworks inspired by Chanel bags by 20 artists and called Mobile Art. The project was unveiled at the Venice art biennale last year – more details and renderings in our story on the Design Museum’s Zaha Hadid Blog.

The Mobile Art Pavilion for Chanel, initially inspired by Chanel’s signature quilted bag and conceived through a system of natural organisation, is also shaped by the functional considerations of the exhibition. However, these further determinations remain secondary and precariously dependent on the overriding formal language of the Pavilion. An enigmatic strangeness has evolved between the Pavilion’s organic system of logic and these functional adaptations arousing the visitor’s curiosity even further.

In creating the Mobile Art Pavilion for Chanel, Zaha Hadid has developed the fluid geometries of natural systems into a continuum of fluent and dynamic space where oppositions between exterior and interior, light and dark, natural and artificial landscapes are synthesized. Lines of energy converge within the Pavilion, constantly redefining the quality of each exhibition space whilst guiding movement through the exhibition. The work of selected artists has been commissioned for the exhibition. Hadid created an entire landscape for their work, rather than just an exhibition space. Visitors will be guided through the space using the latest digital technology developed in collaboration with the artists.

Hadid’s innovative architecture is the reason Karl Lagerfeld invited her to create the Mobile Art Pavilion. She is the first architect to find a way to part with the all-dominating post-Bauhaus aesthetic. The value of her designs is similar to that of great poetry. The potential of her imagination is enormous, Karl Lagerfeld explained during the launch of the Mobile Art Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Art Biennale.
Hadid’s architecture transforms our vision of the future with new spatial concepts and bold, visionary forms. I think through our architecture, we can give people a glimpse of another world, and enthuse them, make them excited about ideas. Our architecture is intuitive, radical, international and dynamic. We are concerned with constructing buildings that evoke original experiences, a kind of strangeness and newness that is comparable to the experience of going to a new country. The Mobile Art Pavilion for Chanel follows these principles of inspiration, states Zaha Hadid.

Redesigned Eiffel Tower Proposal

Updated : News of Paris-based Serero Architects’ installation at the top of the tower has been declared a hoax by La Societe d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE). Apparently, some blogs claimed that this proposal is actually going to happen. But there is one problem, the tower management company has never planned to change the appearance of one of the most instantly recognizable buildings in the world.

By redesigning Eiffel Tower based on Serero Architects proposal, I believe this tower will make more bold statement as iconic symbol of French. Serero Architects have claimed victory in the open competition to redesign Eiffel Tower’s public reception and access areas. Serero’s project will extend the top floor plate of the tower by grafting a high performance carbon Kevlar structure on it. The structure will be temporarily bolted to the slab without requiring any modification of the existing structure. Imagine of having the experienced to see fantastic 360 degrees sight of Paris, priceless. It will be very exciting if this proposal gets approved and built.
